The Spring 2018 runway revealed a sultry side to florals, proving the print is no longer relegated to delicate maxis and precious peasant tops. Instead, designers are choosing to canvas sleek and body-skimming silhouettes with bold, unabashed blooms – and there’s no one more at this helm than celebrity-favorite label Cushnie et Ochs.
We spent an afternoon with Carly and Michelle – the designers behind the eponymous label – in New York City’s flower district (where else?). The duo shared their top tip for styling the season’s new power print, plus their favorite floral piece from the collection.
What’s your favorite thing about spring?
Definitely the longer days!
What was the inspiration behind your Spring 2018 collection?
Our Spring 2018 collection was inspired by the life of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. The oversized, abstract florals featured in our season's print were further developed into 3-D embellishment and embroidery. These details are a nod to the cut-and-paste and surrealist floral techniques of artist Ernesto Artillo.
Do you have a favorite floral piece from the collection?
One of our favorite floral pieces from this collection is the off-the-shoulder printed pencil dress. It's a fresh take on an ultra-classic silhouette, updated with our modern surrealist floral print. Kerry Washington wore this dress to an appearance on Good Morning America immediately following our show. She looked so chic; it was the perfect moment.
What was your design approach to the floral pieces in your spring collection?
It was all about showing that florals can be fearless, seductive and modern. It’s all about pieces with a bold contour and an even stronger print.
What tips do you have for styling a floral print piece?
Keep your accessories minimal, always. Let the flowers do the talking.
