The official first day of the season may land in late September, but everyone knows it's not really Fall until October hits. Between the leaves changing color and Fall fashion kicking into high gear, there's really nothing quite like Autumn in New York. With that in mind, we're kicking off our monthly Mix List series with your ultimate NYC October itinerary: From museum exhibits to a can't-miss coffee celebration, keep reading for five things to do, see, and—of course—shop this October.
1. Visit the Museum of Modern Art's fashion retrospective
Ever wanted to know how the Little Black Dress came to earn acronym status? Or how denim changed fashion forever? "Items: Is Fashion Modern?" (which opened October 1) shares a living history of 111 items across clothing and accessories that left an indeliable mark on how the world gets dressed, and how everything from the white tee (the above Hanes shirt closes the exhibition) to the pearl necklace reflected the influence the culture, identity, politics—and more—of the era.
The Museum of Modern Art, open through January 28,
2. See "Woodshock"
From Rodarte to "roll camera"? This month, Kirsten Dunst stars in Laura and Kate Mulleavy's cinematic debut "Woodshock", an ethereal, hypnotic story of a young woman struggling with loss and losing herself in a dream-like world of psychedelic fragility.
Screening at limited locations.
3. Up your outerwear game
There's no better time than now to stock up on chic outerwear. (After all, no one wants to wait until a blizzard to make sure you're *literally* covered.) Whether you've got an eye on Nour Hammour shearling-trimmed leather or Michelle Mason statement faux leopard, October is the time to step up your jacket game.
4. Get your caffeine fix at the New York Coffee Festival
You probably know someone who can't get through the day without a cup (or three) of coffee. You might even be that person. Take your love (and knowledge) of coffee to the next level by attending The New York Coffee Festival (get tickets here), a two-day event where you can meet world-class baristas, take interactive workshops and enjoy unlimited (yes, actually) coffee. Who needs sleep, anyway?
October 13-15, Metropolitan Pavillion: 125 West 18th Street.
5. Go apple picking
Early October is prime apple picking season, and let's be honest; sometimes there's nothing better than trading the Urban Jungle for trees and hayrides, if only for a day. (Plus, we'll take any excuse to wear these Robert Clergerie black lace-up booties or this chic Barbara Bui camel pair.)
