Meet the 11 Powerhouse Designers Behind our International Women's Day Collection

Mar 8, 2019

For the woman who does it all. In honor of International Women’s Day, we’ve teamed up with 11 female powerhouse designers on an exclusive capsule collection of closet essentials for the 24/7 woman. From a chic suit for the office to the perfect cocktail dress for when the weekend hits, there’s a piece for every part of her busy life. She never stops, after all – and she needs a wardrobe that can keep up.

The collection debuted today and is currently available to shop. In another show of support for International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, INTERMIX is making a donation to Vital Voices, an organization that invests in fearless women leaders with daring visions – and empowers them to make these visions a reality.

Speaking of daring leaders, a few of the multi-faceted women we’re proud to call our partners have shared the inspiration behind their pieces for the International Women’s Day Collection, as well as insight into how they handle their own busy days.

Amy Smilovic of Tibi

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

When I designed this suit for the collection, it was in the mindset of how a woman feels when she wears a suit. It gives you strength and you feel feminine at the same time.

Who are the women you’ve loved dressing most?

Melissa McCarthy. I just want to have lunch with her

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

This blazer has everything that we love – jeans, leopard and silver – all wrapped into one. Consider it your new elevated jean jacket.

Carly Cushnie of Cushnie

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

This jumpsuit is an evolution from my SS19 collection, which was inspired by my Jamaican heritage. I wanted to create something that a woman can wear for day or night in a beautiful watermelon color – a summery take on red.

What piece in your closet makes you feel confident?

The item that I default to for a dose of confidence is a jumpsuit. It’s one piece, you’re good to go – and it makes you feel strong and powerful.

Who are the women you’ve loved dressing most?

Rihanna because she enjoyed it so much.

Brittany Rothweiler and Mia Rothweiler of The Range

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

We designed a piece that a woman can step into and create her own image. It’s sexy, elevated and feminine without trying too hard. We wanted to make something that’s easy.

What is your best career advice?

“Just go for it. The scariest part of starting something is making the decision to actually do it.” – Mia

What piece in your closet makes you feel confident?

“When I put on a leather jacket, I feel effortlessly cool and like I can instantly take on the day.” – Brittany

Tara Rudes Dann of L’Agence

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

We’re always focusing on women looking and feeling beautiful. The foil detail on this Margot jean adds character. This is a piece she'll truly be seen in.

Jacqueline Kennedy

What is your morning routine?

Wake up, coffee, work out, beauty regimen, spend time with my family and run out the door for a crazy day.

Who are the women you’ve loved dressing most?

I love every woman we’ve dressed. A few off the top of my head are Anna Wintour, Jennifer Lopez, Emmanuelle Alt, Angelina Jolie, Cindy Crawford

Andrea Lieberman of A.L.C.

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

The collaboration process with INTERMIX is always fun. In this instance, the goal was to create a versatile wardrobe to go from day to night that women can easily use in their lives. I went with a print that is powerful, which is a snakeskin and a skirt that you can up or down. It’s that piece a woman can pull out of her closet without thinking. She can throw on a sweater or a blazer with it. It’s a really fun and strong but also feminine piece.

Why is International Women’s Day significant for you personally?

This day is important to me because I have experienced in my life that women work twice as hard for half as much, and it’s time to change that paradigm.

Who is your role model?

Ruth Badass Ginsburg, Nancy Pelosi, all of the women standing strong amongst a sea of suits

When do you feel like you’re running the world?

When I get enough sleep. When something comes out of the workroom that we’ve designed, and I love it, and I put it on and feel powerful.

What piece in your closet makes you feel powerful?

The Sedgwick Jacket, a beautifully tailored blazer

Who are the women you’ve loved dressing most?

Jennifer Lopez and Mary J. Blige. I love them both with all of my heart. I also love my clients. There’s nothing more that I love than dressing the women we make clothes for today. It’s so rewarding.

Saloni Lohda of Saloni

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

The Olivia is a signature Saloni dress made in beautiful, rich satin and a bright yellow print. I wanted to create a spring / summer dress that’s very versatile and can be worn for any occasion in the summer.

Why is International Women’s Day significant for you personally?

International Women’s Day is important to me because having a day each year when we can celebrate achievements and bring them to the attention of the world is a powerful thing. It’s also an important opportunity to remind ourselves of the work that needs to be done everywhere to achieve gender equality.

What is your best career advice?

The most important advice I have for women regarding their career is to start from a place of authenticity and passion.

What is your self-care routine?

A long swim followed by a steam

Angela Missoni of Missoni

What was the inspiration for your exclusive piece?

I designed this top and skirt in Missoni's iconic lurex, a fabric my mother championed in many of the brand's early designs – an famously showed during a revolutionary show in the late sixties at the Pitti Fair in Florence.

Why is International Women's Day significant to you personally?

My mother Rosita founded Missoni with my father 65 years ago. Eventually, my parents passed along the role of Creative Director me. My daughter Margherita is now the Creative Director of M Missoni. The Missoni women have always been a formidable force, and we have always been at the forefront of the family business. Every day, I'm inspired by my mother, by my two daughters and by the incredible women on our team working in our factories in Sumirago and doing myriad wonders behind the scenes. Women must stand together and support each other each and every day. Together, we can shake things up and create excitign narratives, shaping history and inspiring younger generations to do the same.
