Spring 2018 Fashion Week Diary: New York

Everyone in New York City (fine, maybe not everyone, but at least everyone here at INTERMIX) knows that September’s arrival signifies two things: 1) The premature return of pumpkin spice-flavored everything and 2) New York Fashion Week. Twice a year, Manhattan's streets turn into catwalks, with everyone from models to editors to bloggers and buyers flocking to the shows for a season of new, next and now. And whether you’re sitting front row or are keeping up with the action on Instagram, one thing's for sure: NYFW is an event not to be missed.

This season, we’re taking you to the Spring 2018 shows with us to get an insider view on what a week’s worth of runway collections is like for our buying team. First up, meet one of our senior buyers for Ready to Wear, Swim and Private Label, Jennifer Redd:

Can you walk us through a typical day for you during New York Fashion Week?
Mornings start either in a designer’s showroom, or attending shows and presentations. We photograph so many things along the way—street style, scenery, showroom floral arrangements—everything. We share the photos as inspiration among the buying team, then go back to the office to style out the best collections, discuss trend and color direction, and collaborate on the INTERMIX edit for the season. Each day is different from the next, but they all involve equal parts creativity, customer focus and strategy. We strive for an authentic point of view!

Tell us a bit about your personal style.
I gravitate towards designers with a feminine and romantic sensibility. Ruffles, lace and soft florals are all staples in my wardrobe—and neutrals too, which I usually pair together.

What’s your favorite thing about fashion week?
I’m always excited to see new ways of styling on the catwalks. This sets the tone for the current buying season and for our key investment styles. Some seasons, it’s all about the over-the-knee boot, and the next we are feeling sock booties. It’s always fun working with a clean slate each market. We can take it in any direction.

What are some of your fashion week essentials?
My crossbody Givenchy bag. We’re focused on being more digital, and reducing our footprint, and a small bag restricts the amount of papers I will ultimately print and carry. Beauty-wise, Tata Harper Purifying Mask saves face after a long week of appointments. More than anything though, adequate sleep gets me through!

Where are some of your favorite spots to eat, drink or re-caffeinate during NYFW?
Mornings start with coffee at The Smile or La Colombe—the stronger the better! I still love Indochine for their cocktails and fashionable crowd, and they have great wall paper too!

What are you most excited for the Spring 2018 shows?
I look forward to seeing new trends and fresh color stories to reset our merchandising strategy in store and online. Delivering newness to the customer and also finding emerging designer talent is largely how INTERMIX differentiates itself from the market.
