Step into the L’Agence atelier in New York City and you’re instantly transported from the cacophony of bustling Manhattan to a chic showroom where minimal décor and pretty ironwork evoke the feel of an idyllic Parisian apartment. It’s the sort of space that serves as the perfect complement to an enviable collection of elevated basics, luxe statement pieces and irresistible denim that are among the label’s signatures; you've likely had the chance to fall in love with them yourself while seeing them IRL in our stores. Here, we chatted with Vice President and Partner Tara Rudes on her sources of design inspiration, style must-haves and the concept behind the L’Agence studio.
Walk us through the L’Agence space.
Our space was designed and created by Abraham Anderson, who moved back to New York from Paris after receiving the Parisian Gold Medal Awards in 1899 for his painting “Morning After the Ball”.The Parisian influence translates through the entire space; from the painted glass cathedral dome ceiling to the dark hardwood floors with black railings and white walls.
What are some of your sources of design inspiration?
I’m inspired by images of iconic actresses, models, music and art. Most of all, it’s from a women’s femininity; Our intention is to always have a women feel and look beautiful.
What’s your relationship with the INTERMIX brand?
We work with an incredible team who have managed to identify their client, and are able to give the woman what they she's looking for from head to toe, day to night—which is exactly what L'Agence offers.
L’Agence merges L.A.’s effortless style with classic Parisian elegance. Tell us how this ethos manifests in your designs.
L’Agence is a California lifestyle brand influenced by the Parisian runways. Simplicity and being relevant and on-trend is at the core of our designs.
Denim is such a wardrobe staple, and a major part of the L’Agence brand. Can you speak to the label's approach to denim and how you make it unique?
We set out to create the best denim styles that contour your body. Our contoured waistband, washes and silhouettes are why we’re a woman’s go-to denim brand.
What are some of the essential L’Agence pieces in your rotation?
Our Margot High Rise in Noir is the most saturated black denim I’ve ever seen. My everyday pieces that make me feel confident are a classic Jane Cami paired back with our Cameron Shirt Dress worn open as a duster, or with our Chamberlain Blazer.
