What's the next best thing to having a Hollywood stylist on call for every special occasion? We can think of two things: Either get styled by us in-store, or shop a clothing line designed by a veteran Hollywood stylist who knows all the tricks in the book when it comes to looking—and feeling—your best. Lucky for us, Mary Alice Haney did exactly that when she launched her label, Haney, in 2013. Since then, she's swiftly become a celeb favorite with dresses—like the prismatic pink showstopper, above—that all but demand a photo op.
We chatted with the stylist-turned-designer on her impressive career in fashion, the best thing about her clients and why she loves being based in Los Angeles. Read on for our interview.
How does your experience as a professional stylist and fashion editor affect you as a designer?
Each style is its own fashion moment. When I design, I think about each look as much as I do an entire collection. It has to live and be strong on its own. I also know what works and what doesn't on a women's body; I’ve styled so many different types of women, and I design with each of them in mind.
Your decades-long career spans fashion styling, editorial, and now, creative director of your own label. Did you always know you wanted to work in fashion?
Yes! I was reading Vogue and making sketches when I was a little girl. I had four sisters and we loved playing dress up in my mother's amazing closet. She had the famous Pierre Cardin "car wash" dress that we used to play in and it's now in the Met. I grew up surrounded by great fashion.
What does it mean for your pieces to be carried at INTERMIX?
I'm a huge INTERMIX shopper. They curate their collections in a great way, and I'm thrilled to be carried there.
You’ve totally reimagined the black dress in several ways this season—we have dresses that feature cut outs, dramatic slits, and metallic elements and more. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind these pieces?
Every piece has a special detail: incredible hardware, a unique cut or an exquisite fabric. They are each designed to make a statement. The collection was inspired by the Warren Beatty movie, "Shampoo" and I love the ‘70s vibe of it.
How would you style the dresses from the INTERMIX selection? What accessories/shoes would bring them to life?
I would style them with simple accessories and shoes—the pieces themselves pack a lot of punch. These Giuseppe Zanotti blush pumps, black sandals and this Ela Rae bracelet are a few great pieces I would style with them.
Your brand has been described as ‘California Ease Meets Red Carpet Glamour’. Can you speak a little more to how this manifests in your designs?
Every piece is designed and made in L.A. The city is in our DNA and it infuses the effortless glamour of each collection. While each piece could be worn on a red carpet, you could also throw them in a carry-on and head to vacation.
What has it been like to dress women like Chrissy Teigen, Heidi Klum and Jessica Biel, among others?
It's such a thrill to be able to see my creations on some of the most talented and glamorous women in the world—they are just as beautiful inside as they are out. They all tell me that they love how wearing a Haney design makes them feel. They know they will look super stylish and glamorous, but also comfortable.
You live and work in Los Angeles. What’s your favorite part about being based there?
L.A. is a city of dreamers and doers, and I love living and creating Haney here. I have the most incredible group of women who I am lucky enough to have in my life—they support me in every way. I also love the sunshine and being with my husband, who I met in Los Angeles.
